Fig Fanatic: Growing Figs with Phil D’Angelis

Phil D'Angelis with a Fig Tree

“I have figs that taste like honey, agave nectar, melon with honey. For the berry-flavored figs, I have ones that have cherry tones, ones that taste like strawberry jam, and even ones with a raspberry flavor as well!”

Phil D’Angelis

Let’s talk figs. One of our members is Phil D’Angelis of Phil’s Figs. Professionally, Phil is a geologist. However, his hobby is raising figs.

While visiting family in Italy some years ago, Phil was introduced to his first fresh fig, and a new passion was born. Since then, he has collected fig trees from many countries. He now has his own backyard nursery which includes trees from Italy, Algeria, France, Portugal…you get the idea. He has 65 different varieties.

Recently, he gave a program on growing figs to our club members. He brought both trees and fruit to the presentation. Some of the trees were less than 2 years old and were already growing fruit.

We all know our heat and humidity can be treacherous on plant life, but his fig trees thrive here. One of the samples he shared with me tasted like cherries. I asked what other flavors he had. His response…

“I have figs that taste like honey, agave nectar, melon with honey. For the berry-flavored figs, I have ones that have cherry tones, ones that taste like strawberry jam, and even ones with a raspberry flavor as well!”

You can follow Phil on Instagram (@philsfigs) and meet him at our upcoming Fall Plant Sale on September 8th & 9th at 2318 Metts Ave. We’ll be there from 9am-6pm. Do you have a fig tree growing in your yard? I have my order in already!

See you at the sale!
